BLMB COVID-19 Updates: BLM Month Canceled due to COVID-19, Join the Orga Team, and General Info
+++ Deutsche Übersetzung unten +++
Dear Black Community,
As you have noticed, Black Lives Matter Berlin (BLMB) in compliance with medical professionals regarding COVID-19, withdrew from all in-person events. Since we in no way want to contribute to any exposure of marginalized groups to COVID-19, we’ve decided to cancel all events for the annual Black Lives Matter Month in June, as well as the BLM March planned for July. We will use the time to regroup and focus our energy on online activities and strategies for future actions.
We’ve got a LOT to inform you about. Here’s a list of info you can find in this newsletter! Sign Up!

BLM Month CANCELED – Event Support via Facebook/IG
Despite BLM Month being canceled, we still offer support to organizers in June 2020. Community members are invited to submit self-organized online events for promotion via our Facebook page. We’ll post weekly event summaries as well as add events to our FB calendar. Events taking place online that meet community guidelines will be added to the Facebook event calendar. Deadline for placement in the Monday weekly summary post is the Thursday before. First deadline is May 28th to be included in the June 1st summary.
Please send detailed event info/event pages via direct message on Facebook, BLM Monat Mattermost channel, or to kontakt@blacklivesmatterberlin.de. For Instagram promotion, please tag @blacklivesmatterberlin and make sure it’s sharable, so we can repost!
Call for Help from International Women* Space & Women In Exile
Women in Exile (WIE) and International Women* Space (IWS), which support undocumented women primarily from the diaspora need the following help! Email info@women-in-exile.net and iwspace@iwspace.de directly or call IWS 015214855720 if you can help in any of the following ways!
- Rooms/housing for refugee women*
- Lawyers who can write response letters for women* in the asylum process
- A doctor familiar with endometriosis to assist in a process of a refugee woman* suffering from it – please contact IWS!
- Nonperishables for women* and children (ie, cleaning supplies, feminine hygiene, diapers, etc)
- Cash and non-restricted donations
- Researchers! Currently IWS & WIE need help finding, compiling COVID-19 infection rates in refugee camps in Berlin/Brandenburg as well as the rest of Germany. This is absolutely necessary for them to understand where they need to provide aid.
Join the Orga Team
We’re a small all-volunteer organizing team with limited capacities and busy everyday lives. With more help we could do more for the community, especially given what’s happening (in Germany) at the moment. We need more hands and brains and are actively looking for new members to collaborate in leading BLMB.
Want to get involved? Let us know how you would like to help, what you want to focus on or what your strengths are. All levels of commitment, both large and small, are welcome on the team! Contact us on Orga Team channel or send an email to kontakt@blacklivesmatterberlin.de to join Mattermost and be informed of our next internal Orga Team meeting.
BLM Stammtisch Continues ONLINE
The Stammtisch will continue to meet as regularly scheduled, the 4th Thursday of each month at 8PM, online, until further notice. The next Stammtisch will potentially take place on May 28th, 8 PM, but we are still looking for someone to host. Please get in touch if you’d like to help out!
Remember that the Stammtisch is for Black diasporic people only!
Online Community Platform built on Mattermost
Currently, we are overwhelmed with all the online platforms, but we’ve created a safer space online exclusively for us by us, absent of data tracking, algorithms and white fuckery we can’t seem to get away from Facebook and the like. This is a space for us to chat, share events, work and information!
If you haven’t logged in for a while, come check it out! Also if you need to organize a Black community group, let us know on the Instructions on Use! channel, and we’ll help you set it up!
If you haven’t received a login, get in touch with us via email and someone will contact you soon about setting you up.
